James Pallatt

Thursday, 17 July 2008. Why does it always rain on me? I SHOULD be high in the Alps right now, looking out across Austria. I should be excited about exploring ice and mammoth caves inside the Dachstein mountains, visiting the famous Ice Palace and King Artus’ Cathedral where the preserved bones of a cave bear were apparently once discovered. Instead, I am sat alone in a cold reception area inside the Magpies’ training-base with rain beating heavily against the window. Of all days, why today? Water tortur...

James Pallatt: Mountain air takes breath away

http://eveningpostjamespallatt.blogspot.com/2008/07/mountain-air-takes-breath-away.html

Sunday, 13 July 2008. Mountain air takes breath away. IT IS difficult, almost impossible in fact, to imagine a more beautiful place to be in the world than high in the mountains of Austria – except maybe being sat opposite supermodel Gisele Bundchen in a jacuzzi sipping champagne that is! I know the air is thinner at 1,677 feet elevation, where the clouds are almost in touching distance (even for me! But it quite simply takes your breath away – unless your name is Russell Hoult. There was a delay to the ...

James Pallatt: May 2008

http://eveningpostjamespallatt.blogspot.com/2008_05_01_archive.html

Tuesday, 6 May 2008. No need for hot-pants. I HAVE to start with a confession. I feel it is only right. I knew nothing about women’s football before I was told I would be covering its biggest domestic showpiece at the City Ground, the FA Cup final. The only time it had come under my radar was when FIFA president Sepp Blatter ridiculously suggested a few years ago that the players should wear tighter shorts to raise the pules of viewers – and its popularity. I can only suspect those same critics have neve...

James Pallatt: Water torture for Magpies' players

http://eveningpostjamespallatt.blogspot.com/2008/07/water-torture-for-magpies-players.html

Wednesday, 16 July 2008. Water torture for Magpies' players. IT LOOKED ice cold from where I was stood overlooking on a wooden bridge, with the tide of the River Traun rushing beneath me, impatiently towards Lake Hallstatt. And from the faces of the Notts County players it was. Some sat on rocks on the water’s edge while others dared to wade out further, almost into the eye of the tide’s purposeful path, and stood immersed to waist-height, shivering. The Watcher: April 2008

http://whoisthewatcher.thisisnottingham.co.uk/2008_04_01_archive.html

The News in your area. The Unveiling of the Brian Clough Statue. Saturday, 26 April 2008. Well, I don’t know if it was just low expectations following last week’s flattish effort (and previous two-parters stinking the place up), but I ended up rather enjoying that. Not sure it all quite hung together, but there were a lot of very pleasing bits - not least the fact the Sontarans are rather interesting all of a sudden, aren’t they? Been done, hasn’t it? Sontarans aside, there was a lot for oldies and newbi...

The Watcher: Regeneration: Who knew?

http://whoisthewatcher.thisisnottingham.co.uk/2008/07/regeneartion-who-knew.html

The News in your area. The Unveiling of the Brian Clough Statue. Wednesday, 2 July 2008. If you can read this, it means that - finally - the Internet is cool enough to touch again. As has been widely reported, the sheer level of fan speculation following Saturday’s explosive climax (it reached an incredible 17.3 on the Hugh-Bonneville Scale) caused heat exchangers at the Internet’s UK hub - actually a giant warehouse in Rugby - to go into meltdown. It’s great, innit? 8217; bit…. 8230;in the Black Country...

The Watcher: Last-minute change

http://whoisthewatcher.thisisnottingham.co.uk/2008/06/last-minute-change.html

The News in your area. The Unveiling of the Brian Clough Statue. Saturday, 28 June 2008. As your correspondent (currently convalescing in East coast exile) drops, drained and confused, into the Chair of Reckoning for the weekly outpouring, the mobile goes off. As your resident Mysterious Projection From The Future, I feel I’ve let you down, because I just didn’t see it coming. But did you? I mean it can’t be, can it? If it is… but it can’t be! But it could be! BUT IT COULD BE! And all that did happen, of...

http://whoisthewatcher.thisisnottingham.co.uk/2008/06/left-in-no-doubt.html

The News in your area. The Unveiling of the Brian Clough Statue. Saturday, 21 June 2008. Left in no doubt. Well, it was the Doctor-Lite one… but otherwise this was as heavy, bleak and brilliant as anything ever done under the Doctor Who banner. It was almost… ach! Writer Russell T Davies certainly understands that - and what a brilliant, long game he’s playing with the viewers. First the showman’s tricks, the feints, the misdirections;. 8216;This season will be the ‘lighter one’. 8217; And then this.

The News in your area. The Unveiling of the Brian Clough Statue. Saturday, 7 June 2008. Strange news from another world: it appears - and perhaps you’d better sit down - some people didn’t like Silence in the Library. Yes, yes, I know exactly what you’re thinking: the chumps! Actually turning the telly off halfway through the episode. Another confessed to disappointment on discovering there was a part two due - and not as in ‘I just can’t wait another week! 8217;, either. Long-term fans found themselves ...

The Watcher: Time we said goodbye

http://whoisthewatcher.thisisnottingham.co.uk/2008/07/time-we-said-goodbye.html

The News in your area. The Unveiling of the Brian Clough Statue. Saturday, 5 July 2008. Time we said goodbye. 8230;of course, nobody. Thought he was regenerating, did they? Still, that ‘regeneration energy’ business struck Team Watcher as slight swizz, as if Rassilon’s great gift to the Time Lords - a complete cellular remix, but only when strictly necessary - was little more than the recipe for a pick-me-up, like Lucozade. That said, it only registered a 4.4 on the ‘Naaaaaah! But if Rose brought the Doc...

http://eamonngavigan.blogspot.com/2008/07/how-many-men-does-it-take-to-make-hole.html

Nottingham - Local News. Wednesday, 16 July 2008. How many men does it take to make a hole three inches in diameter and about six inches deep? Well, if they are from the Royal and Ancient, eight. One to hold the tape, one to press the contraption which makes the hole into the ground and six to make sure they are doing it right. They must have been higher up the ladder than the two labourers. They had their hands in their pockets, a sure sign they must be bosses. It took about an hour to make the decision...

Matt Halfpenny: Unity at Stags is encouraging for future

http://matthalfpenny.blogspot.com/2009/02/unity-at-stags-is-encouraging-for.html

Monday, 9 February 2009. Unity at Stags is encouraging for future. MANSFIELD Town are a club who have taken a hell of a lot of criticism over recent seasons. During the Keith Haslam era, the Stags never seemed to be far from the headlines for all the wrong reasons. And even though the new board have been in charge for just a matter of months, they have already had their problems, not least when the club were deducted four points for fielding ineligible players early in the season. Given that Friday&#8217...

Matt Halfpenny: Adlington legacy just won't last

http://matthalfpenny.blogspot.com/2008/08/adlington-legacy-just-wont-last.html

Wednesday, 13 August 2008. Adlington legacy just won't last. CALL it coincidence, but Water Meadows in Mansfield was packed yesterday morning after Rebecca Adlington’s Olympic gold medal swim on Monday. Admittedly, the ‘baths’, as they call them round my way, are significantly busier during the school holidays. It was also raining outside, so there was not much chance of getting out on the local park with jumpers for goalposts either. What would particularly please me is to see more kids diving in at the...

Matt Halfpenny: Mansfield Town - that sinking feeling

http://matthalfpenny.blogspot.com/2008/04/mansfield-town-that-sinking-feeling.html

Wednesday, 30 April 2008. Mansfield Town - that sinking feeling. I will never forget the goal that effectively relegated Mansfield from the Football League. It was one of those goals you see on compilation DVDs. One of those once-a-season efforts that defies explanation. As soon as Jamie Yates’ 40-yard lob from out on the right touchline had beaten the back-pedaling Jason White to nestle in the back of the net, I knew it was all over for the Stags. These days, you get what you pay for in football, so it ...

Dig It!

Nottingham - Local Sport. Saturday, 26 July 2008. Colleagues of mine asked this week if I'm a member of THE allotment association. My blank expression said it all. I didn't know there was one. But, of course. There is an association for allotmenteers. There's an association for everything. Should I/we become associates of all things allotment? And is there a special signal or handshake, so that members can identify one another when undertaking non-gardening activities? Posted by Dig It! Well, I have just...

Thursday, 24 July 2008. Switzerland - but not as you know it. We arrived there after a 10 hour bus ride from Brazil and foolishly asked to be dropped in Punta del Este - a seaside resort well-known for its Yacht Club set, usually found strutting along the esplanade in their Gucci sunglasses. Tuesday, 8 January 2008. 68,000 complaints about Severn Trent.I wonder why? It was reported this week that Severn Trent had more complaints than any other water company last year. PAUL HINDLE thinks he has the reason. I read in my Evening Post this week that complaints to Severn Trent Water (STW) rose 90% in the last year. Apparently 68,874 of us felt sufficiently peeved to drop the company a line. As a serial complainer to STW, this news came as no surprise to me. I could have started to understand thes...

Friday, 6 June 2008. My Antiques Roadshow shock. The following might come as a shock to anyone who regularly watches The Antiques Roadshow. You know the big reveal - the bit where a keen collector is told the broach he found buried in his garden is actually worth a five figure sum? That doesn't actually happen. Having spent an afternoon observing a filmed section of the show in picturesque Bolton Abbey in North Yorkshire with my girlfriend's family, I can now reveal the somewhat shocking truth. Tuesday, April 29, 2008. My mother was serious about etiquette, especially when it came to table manners. My brother and I were instructed early on in the proper way to hold silverware (known in these parts as cutlery), we were thoroughly warned against talking with our mouths full and woe betide the child (or husband) who rested his or her elbows on the table during the meal. Elbows on the table were an open invitation for Mom to jab the offender's tender skin with her fork. Tuesday, April 15, 2008.
