Down here in the swamp, this past week in Central Florida saw an absolutely horrendous accident — a woman swimming at a popular spot on a local river was pulled under by an alligator and lost her arm. I read a story somewhere on the Internet about a lady who ran on her gym equipment everyday to train for a big hike, but on climbing the first hill had to hand her pack to someone else as she just couldn’t make it. Her training did little to prepare her for the terrain. I decided that to train effectively I had to have a full pack and had to seek out every steep hill, ramp or set of stairs that I could find.
