La Gringa Culichi: The Pursuit of Khaki-ness

http://gringaculichi.blogspot.com/2010/01/pursuit-of-khaki-ness.html

Mexican adventures in Sinaloa, Oaxaca and everywhere in between. Tuesday, January 12, 2010. The Pursuit of Khaki-ness. Khaki isn’t exactly the prettiest color in the world. It’s the stuff of Gap ads and corporate casual dress codes, the proverbial “vanilla” of the crayon box: It’s not really the color I’d reach for if I were asked to paint the picture of my life for the past two and a half years. I’d choose orange for Buddhist temples. Or green for the calm forests I used to cycle. My colleague, who left...

La Gringa Culichi: For the love of God...

http://gringaculichi.blogspot.com/2009/07/for-love-of-god.html

Mexican adventures in Sinaloa, Oaxaca and everywhere in between. Wednesday, July 15, 2009. For the love of God. I'm a little cranky today. My sour mood might have something to do with the fact that, for two consecutive mornings, I've woken up at 5:30 am to fireworks being launched right outside my bedroom window. The shoe store across the street, the one with the fantastically annoying talking car. Opens up shortly thereafter, making for a peaceful, relaxing start to the day.). 161;POR EL AMOR DE DIOS!

La Gringa Culichi: Meet the Fockers (à la Mexicana)

http://gringaculichi.blogspot.com/2009/11/theres-nothing-like-spending-sunday.html

Mexican adventures in Sinaloa, Oaxaca and everywhere in between. Tuesday, November 3, 2009. Meet the Fockers (à la Mexicana). There’s nothing like spending a Sunday night in a cemetery. With your Mexican boyfriend. And his entire extended family. Meeting a significant other’s family is always a bit awkward. There’s the anxiety of making a good first impression. Of hoping they like you. Of remembering new faces and names. Throw in the twist of dating a Mexican, and you do all of the above. And that’...

La Gringa Culichi: The early bird makes lots of noise

http://gringaculichi.blogspot.com/2008/12/early-bird-makes-lots-of-noise.html

Mexican adventures in Sinaloa, Oaxaca and everywhere in between. Wednesday, December 3, 2008. The early bird makes lots of noise. Back when I was living in Chicago, I sometimes had trouble getting to sleep at night. My old neighborhood, Wrigleyville, was what some people might call. I kind of liked the company, the thought of someone else awake at that God-forsaken hour. Mornings, however, are a different story. On my first Sunday in Huajuapan, I woke up at about 6am to the sound of what I thought we...

La Gringa Culichi: July 2008

http://gringaculichi.blogspot.com/2008_07_01_archive.html

Mexican adventures in Sinaloa, Oaxaca and everywhere in between. Wednesday, July 30, 2008. Forgotten Tips and Pink Toenails. My first six hours in Mexico were a little rough, the kind of rough that made me momentarily rethink my decision to leave my comfortable life in Japan (for those of you just stumbling onto my little blog, the back story is here. To start all over again in Mexico. And turned my head to see a security guard running down the hall in my direction. Then my suitcases got lost. And, while...

The Cochran Family: November 2011

http://cochran-family-blog.blogspot.com/2011_11_01_archive.html

Sunday, November 20, 2011. Since I've had Isabella, the grandparents have done an awesome job coming over and keeping the older ones (and sometimes all four) amused while Matt and I run errands, get things done around the house, and sometimes nap :). Posted by The Cochrans. Friday, November 18, 2011. While all the other students in the class were thankful for his/her mommy and daddy or family, my son was thankful for.his bedroom! The Cochran Family: MORE POMS!

http://cochran-family-blog.blogspot.com/2012/01/more-poms.html

Sunday, January 29, 2012. Addison Trail had another Poms Clinic and Maggie was once again eager to join in on the dancing fun. My friend's little girl, Jordan, also participated so Maggie was even more excited when she found out she'd be dancing with Jordan! They performed during halftime of an Addison Trail basketball game. Maggie and Jordan were actually the only two little ones so they stole the show :). Check out her devious smile, "What Mom? Posted by The Cochrans. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Quinto Sol: October 2009

http://5th-sun.blogspot.com/2009_10_01_archive.html

Tuesday, October 06, 2009. The Gravity of the Downhill. The decision was made. To evaluate on the course whether or not to chase another BQ. This course has been good to me with two BQs ( 3:12:32. And 3:14:XX), both with HUGE negative splits; I knew the second half was much faster than the first. If I "felt" it, the goal was to run around 1:41:30 for the first half and negative split the second half by two minutes or more. I miss the third mile marker, but I am still running by feel and the pace seems ea...

Quinto Sol: Race Day - October 1, 2005

http://5th-sun.blogspot.com/2005/10/race-day-october-1-2005.html

Friday, October 21, 2005. Race Day - October 1, 2005. I was to use this race as a Boston Qualifier. To say the least my expectations were high. I had done the training; I was ready. However, anxiety was getting the best of me and had two consecutive bad nights. Not only were the sleepless nights a bad omen, the lack of sleep made me feel tired before the race. Oh and I did qualify for Boston. Yeah, life is good! Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). A Whole Lot of Soles. Race Reports of Note.

Quinto Sol: The Fall in New York

http://5th-sun.blogspot.com/2009/11/fall-in-new-york.html

Sunday, November 08, 2009. The Fall in New York. Fast forward to November 1st. . and my last day on antibiotics. I head to the green corral even though it's supposed to be closed. I am allowed to enter it; I move my way forward as much as possible. It's not nearly as windy as last year. I spot Dean Karnazes; he looks thinner than I remember. I ended up waiting 30 minutes. I don't know. Instinct I guess. Miles 3 and 4 in 16:43. Still feeling good. I was proven right once I entered Manhattan. Mile 22, ...

Quinto Sol: Rome Marathon - Vini, Vidi, Vinci

http://5th-sun.blogspot.com/2006/04/rome-marathon-vini-vidi-vinci.html

Monday, April 03, 2006. Rome Marathon - Vini, Vidi, Vinci. I had hopes of staying in the city center but lo and behold, when I tried to book a hotel recommended by a friend, it was full. So I ended up staying in a B&B about 5K south of the EUR FERMI station and whose owners are really wonderful people. I was then given a coupon to pick up my book-bag (rather nice) which contained some goodies and a t-shirt. The way the organizers seeded runners was in four corrals. Corral A was for elites, B for bibs...

http://5th-sun.blogspot.com/2006/05/flying-bacon-may-2006.html

Tuesday, May 30, 2006. Flying Bacon - May 2006. This 'thon was to be the third one in six weeks with Boston being the meat of the sandwich. During my flight to Indy, I seriously considered switching to the half, but I wanted the bigger medal :-). So my plan was to stay with the 3:30 pace group for as long as possible. The cannon booms and we’re off. It takes just over 30 seconds to cross the start. The first mile goes by fairly quickly and the effort seems just about right, 8:09. The fi...I am running wi...

Gringa Cooking in Mexico

Gringa Cooking in Mexico. Tuesday, October 16, 2012. Vegan Low-Fat Buttermilk Drop Scones with Dried Fruit. I always thought I didn't like scones. It turns out that I don't like stale scones. Warm, fresh scones straight from the oven are a different story entirely. They're fast, easy, delicious, and divine with a cup of coffee or Oaxacan hot chocolate. I veganized this recipe from The New All Purpose Joy of Cooking. It really is a great book, even for vegetarians and vegans. 2 1/2 c. all-purpose flour.

La Gringa Culichi

Mexican adventures in Sinaloa, Oaxaca and everywhere in between. Friday, February 12, 2010. I’ve learned a new Spanish word recently:. Lo siento, Sarita. I’m not sure how to translate that.”. Sorry I’m not sure how to translate that.”. I was reading a mindless gossip magazine. Literally, “sour and sweet,” or “bittersweet.” Ironically enough, it's also used to describe the flavor or what we English speakers know as sweet-and-sour chicken.). But this time I’m doing it for a Latino-focused community g...

La Gringa Desempleada

Tuesday, March 1, 2011. End of the Line. I would like to correct something from my previous post on ¨convis¨. During my lesson on methods of transportation last week, I was told by a co-teacher that convis are actually called combis. Turns out, I had been calling the collective vans in Trujillo by the wrong name since day one. I thought I should pass this information along to all of you so you don't make the same mistake. A classic Trujillo COMBI. Group photo with our youngest class in Uno A. Last night ...
