Fall Apple Bake and Bourbon Apple Oatmeal. Have you gone apple picking yet? If not, go now and embrace the season! I went apple picking a few weeks ago. Here in New England we had a drought, so I had to prepare myself for a different sort of crop. Less water means smaller, less abundant apples. However, when we got to the orchard, the apples were still beautiful and delicious. On to the APPLES! 8 medium size tart apples; peeled, cored, and sliced (McIntosh and Cortland are best). 1 tablespoons lemon juice.

Pimms and Lemonade, or simply “Pimms”. Pimms: a British, gin-based liquor with notes of citrus and spice. Pimms: Memories, Memories, Memories. Pimms brings me back to Oxford in an instant. On weekends, my classmates and I would go to pubs in town (Turf Tavern and Head of the River, to be exact) and order a pitcher of Pimms. Just as colorful as it is refreshing, Pimms and Lemonade will surely add a bit of freshness and vitality to your midday brunch or evening happyhour. 1 wedge lemon, orange, and/or lime.
Braised Kale and Parmesan Whole Grain Rice Bowl

Braised Kale and Parmesan Whole Grain Rice Bowl. April 30, 2015. April 30, 2015. Is it just me, or was kale not really around in the 90s? I’m sure it was, but as a child I was too fixated on Dunkaroos. Those fake cheese snacks with the bread sticks or pretzel sticks for dipping, and Little Debbie oatmeal pies. My family ate healthfully for the most part, but hearty leafy veggies like kale were not exactly on our radar. When I interned at America’s Test Kitchen. What is braising, you ask? Braised Kale and...

Chinese Cooking Experiment #1: Scallion Pancakes. Last night I delved into Chinese cooking experimentation (while Mrs. Chang’s advice is still fresh in my mind). First up scallion pancakes! To be put into a pancake like this (in my humble opinion). And the pancake magically has these doughy layers reminiscent of flaky biscuits, though it’s not exactly the same thing. Wondrous! I know. It’s tragic how long I went without them. A recipe is here. To remind you from my previous post. 5 Take your chopped scal...

Where to eat in Boston. Wednesday, September 24, 2014. The Pumpkin Spice Latte Challenge. Happy Pumpkin Season everyone! It seems like just a few years ago Starbucks invented the “Pumpkin Spice Latte” and now it’s an unstoppable force in cafes. Pumpkin spice is everywhere, from pastries to beer to lasagna noodles. Don't click this link if you're prone to buying weird foods online). I have, maybe, one a year. Thanks for leaving a comment. All comments require approval by the blog moderators, so there ...

Where to eat in Boston. Sunday, July 22, 2012. Quick Bites: Brown Rice Sushi at Mr. Sushi. We're introducing a new feature at Gourmanding called "Quick Bites", in which we highlight one great menu item or insiders' secret to a restaurant in the Boston area. Our first Quick Bite is brown rice sushi at Mr. Sushi. Wednesday, July 18, 2012. Our meal began with bread, which pictures do not do justice. I would've made a meal of this bread and been perfectly happy. The warm bread was soft in the center ...Next,...
Gourmanding: Panera Bread Pumpkin Spice Latte
http://gourmanding.blogspot.com/2014/09/panera-bread-pumpkin-spice-latte.html
Where to eat in Boston. Friday, September 26, 2014. Panera Bread Pumpkin Spice Latte. This one was a somewhat accidental PSL trial. I was on my way to class at 5:45 and thought I’d get a Starbucks PSL. Unfortunately, the line was out the door. I headed across the street to Dunks and – same problem. Then on the street I ran into Kristina (btw, if you’re reading this you really need to check out her blog. The best word I can come up with for the flavoring of Panera’s PSL is “soft.” Ci...Thanks for leaving ...

Where to eat in Boston. Friday, September 20, 2013. New Favorite Brunch Spot - The Neighborhood. Except I was SO WRONG not to insist on going to The Neighborhood the first time Alicia brought it up. This place has reinvented brunch. First of all, you don't sit in a tiny cramped little hole in the wall dining room (at least not in the summer), you sit at a picnic bench under a grape arbor in the fresh air outdoors. What? The Neighborhood restaurant is at 25 Bow Street in Union Square, Somerville. Overall,...

Where to eat in Boston. Friday, August 17, 2012. Quick Bites - Fish Chowder at The Daily Brew (Cataumet, MA). Summer in New England means seafood, and one of my favorite forms of seafood is fish chowder. Last week Greg and I made a visit to The Daily Brew in Cataumet, MA (on Cape Cod) for a bowl of their stellar fish chowder. The chowder is made by hand and available from Friday morning until it runs out. If you're planning a trip down the Cape, don't miss this amazing dish. Wednesday, August 15, 2012.

Where to eat in Boston. Saturday, July 11, 2015. Summer Drinking 2015 - Hard Ciders. According to CNN Money. Hipsters are replaced PBR with craft beers. And according to Slate Money. Rose wine is the drink of the summer. But at our house, hard cider is going strong as our drink of choice for summer 2015. We've been a fan of the Angry Orchard. Thanks for leaving a comment. Gourmanding: October 2014
http://gourmanding.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html
Where to eat in Boston. Saturday, October 4, 2014. The Thinking Cup Pumpkin Spice Latte. The Thinking Cup's PSL is the most expensive one I've tried so far. While the $4.17 price puts it only a little over a quarter more expensive than Peets, the high price belies its itty bitty size. Despite this, it was one of my very favorite PSL's. Location: The Thinking Cup on the Boston Common. It's pretty tiny, so probably not too bad. Room Temp Flavor: so small it'll evaporate before it reaches room temp. Orderin...

Gourmanding: Bobby's Burger Palace
http://gourmanding.blogspot.com/2014/07/bobbys-burger-palace.html
Where to eat in Boston. Saturday, July 26, 2014. So last night I was absolutely desperate for a burger, but I just didn't feel like hitting any of the regular spots. (Not to mention, by the time we were ready to eat it was 9pm and most of those places were closed! I remembered seeing some fuss about a new burger restaurant in the Burlington Mall, so I convinced Greg to come with me to check it out. IF THAT'S LOVE...
Love Of My Life. Wednesday, April 10, 2013. Happy Birthday to my (not so) little boy! Monday, April 1, 2013. Spring/summer time always gets the kids excited for campouts. Alex bought a neat little trailer/tent thing for our side-by-side and set it up Friday night. The kids were so exited about it that they decided they needed to sleep in it that night.which meant I also got to sleep out because they were too scared to stay out by themselves. David turned 8 the 25th of February.can't believe it! That week...

If That's What It Takes
Monday, November 3, 2014. So here's the thing. Life is unpredictable. A huge, rushing, unstoppable roller-coaster. But this wonderful new life has brought with it 60-hour work-weeks, long commutes, frequent travel, and very little time for home, family, friends, or hobbies (or sleep, for that matter). Add to that an unexpected medical "surprise" (no worries, I will be fine in a few months), and, well. you get the point. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Stick to Your Guns. This is Love, This is Life.
