With this slogan George Eastman promoted during the early 1890's his revolutionary simple cameras for amateur photographers: the first series of Kodak boxcameras. The very first Kodak came on the market in 1888. It was loaded with a film for 100 exposures and cost $ 25. In the video you see an example of this first model. Eastman Interchangeable View (1886 - 1890). This camera was made in 12 different plate sizes, ranging from 4 1/4 x 5 1/2 inch to 20 x 24 inches. It is a rare instrument. The total production is only 404. The larger sizes are the rarest. The camera in the video is the 5 x8 inch model. Of this one 75 were made in 1887. The Eastman Interchangeable View was not a cheap camera. Without lens and shutter the smallest model cost $ 26. The largest one had a price tag of $ 100, without lens and shutter.

After the first World War the Hawkeye cameras were often used as premium or give away cameras by non-photographic manufacturers. Examples are Cadbury's Chocolades, Wright's Coal Tar Soap or the makers of Black Cat cigarettes. (If you are interested in this, get yourself a copy of the Colin Harding article What a give-away! Kodak Premium Cameras in Photographica World number 64 of March 1993, pages 19-22.). There are three stated purposes to give away 552,000 cameras to 12 year old children:.

My testlab to measure shutter speeds. To photograph the ground glass I set my camera to 3400 ISO, f/2.8 and 6 seconds exposure. During the exposure the room is dark, so the image on the ground glass can be seen and photographed. With much lower ISO settings the image could not be photographed. What else did I do?
