Bodie is a ghost town east of the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range located at a height of 8,379 feet. Waterman S. Body (William Bodey) discovered gold in the hills north of Mono Lake. Two years later a mill was built and operated by a few dozen miners in what had become known as the town of Bodie.
