Of Plums and Pignuts. Forest gardening and perennial vegetables. The Joy of Promiscuity. This might sound like a rather abrupt change of subject for this blog, but no no, I’m still talking about vegetables, and any high jinks herein are purely plant-based. It does, however, begin with a seedy tale of contacts made on the internet…. The grex originated in a rare flowering of Daubenton’s perennial kale. Pollinated by a number of adjacent brassicas. Since then enthusiasts have been breeding. Big plant breed...

Plant list – Of Plums and Pignuts

https://scottishforestgarden.wordpress.com/what-im-growing

Of Plums and Pignuts. Forest gardening and perennial vegetables. Plants which grow well and produce a worthwhile yield, that I like and that have survived at least one winter with temperatures down to minus fifteen degrees centigrade. Plants which I have in the garden and which show promise, but which I haven’t tried eating yet, which haven’t survived a winter yet or which I’m just generally not sure of. A case of my eyes being bigger than my allotment. 2 thoughts on “ Plant list. 14/12/2014 at 1:07 pm.

Growing and eating udo – Aralia cordata – Of Plums and Pignuts

https://scottishforestgarden.wordpress.com/2014/07/09/growing-and-eating-udo-aralia-cordata

Of Plums and Pignuts. Forest gardening and perennial vegetables. Growing and eating udo – Aralia cordata. May be one of the largest vegetables you will ever grow in your garden. It is a herbaceous perennial, dying right down to the ground every year, then growing to over two metres in height in the summer, so the spring growth is truly spectacular. It is the young shoots that are eaten, so this means that it is also very productive. Udo is one of the Japanese. Western sources mostly only describe one way...

Growing Oca: November 2009

http://oca-testbed.blogspot.com/2009_11_01_archive.html

Top Tips for good yields. List of Oca Trials. Sunday, 29 November 2009. 2009 Growing Season - Oca with tomatoes. After some consideration I decided to bi-crop with tomatoes as the primary crop. So Action-points for this season:. Use a more formal multi-crop structure. Allow more space for the ultimate size of the foliage. Hold out for as late a harvest date as possible. Keep better records of dates, spacing etc. Early March. As previously, I chitted tubers indoors. I was concerned that the lower trusses ...

Growing Oca: Extending the Oca Growing Season through Frost Protection

http://oca-testbed.blogspot.com/2013/12/extending-oca-growing-season-through.html

Top Tips for good yields. List of Oca Trials. Thursday, 12 December 2013. Extending the Oca Growing Season through Frost Protection. The death of foliage from frost signals the end of the oca season, but at this time of year when tuberisation is in full swing, any slight extension of the growing season will have the maximum effect on crop yield. I stress that again; even one extra week without killing frost could easily have more effect on yield than any other factor over the whole growing period. Avoidi...

Growing Oca: July 2010

http://oca-testbed.blogspot.com/2010_07_01_archive.html

Top Tips for good yields. List of Oca Trials. Tuesday, 20 July 2010. This Oca Relative Tastes Better than Oca! Here's another Oxalis weed which has arrived on the plot. I only took notice of it when I dug it out with a trowel during some detailed weeding. It had a substantial (for the size of the plant) tuber. Having a curious nature, I washed it and tasted a corner. It tasted good, so I munched the whole thing. It tasted sweet, moist, succulent, and had no hint of oxalic acid. Update: My later post.

Paganism, Permaculture and Poultrykeeping on a Welsh Hillside. Sunday, 31 May 2015. Yesterday, IB and I watched in fascination as what seemed like hundreds of mayflies danced past on the breeze. Life story of the mayfly. Mate and produce eggs. So single minded is their purpose that. They have no mouths and do not eat. But as they dance and drift in great numbers their fleeting, fragile lives are a reminder of so much that is beautiful, precious, ephemeral. Photograph that allegedly shows fairies. The unf...

Each little task sorted, each little improvement or repair made adds up to get us a bit closer to the goal of bringing Halfway Up A Hill back to life again. 14 June, 2015 13:26.
