Wo meine Rösen blüh'n: Spanish Riding School
http://wheremyrosesbloom.blogspot.com/2012/06/spanish-riding-school.html
Wo meine Rösen blüh'n. A blog about Austria. Saturday, June 30, 2012. One of the great tourist destinations in Vienna I wanted to take my family to was the Spanische Hofreitschule,. Or Spanish Riding school. Mom likes horses, and these are one-of-a-kind, pretty stinking cool horses. Tickets for a show are ridiculously expensive (on their website. You can check price listings) but tickets to their morning exercises are relatively cheap by comparison. Six original foundation stallions were bred in the 18th...

Viennese-inspired Musings: Why German?
http://kweltnerd.blogspot.com/2011/05/why-german.html
Thursday, May 26, 2011. As most people know, German isn't really a "necessary" language. Frankly, I could survive in this country with just a handful of phrases, because most speak at least a little bit of English. German is rarely (if ever? The only language someone in the United States speaks, and generally, someone who speaks German and English could probably do a better translation than I can. So why have I studied this language for 8 years? When college came around, I was automatically signed up for...

Viennese-inspired Musings: February 2011
http://kweltnerd.blogspot.com/2011_02_01_archive.html
Friday, February 25, 2011. If you can't say something nice, say something unabashedly. In general, Americans are pretty vague. "Do you want some coffee? I'm okay, thanks". Or, "Are you coming tonight? Probably not". Our vagueness makes us feel polite, like we're not hurting anyone's feelings. Honestly, I think we Americans are generally unenthusiastic conversationalists, and usually lean towards a (fake? Here are some examples of real conversations I've had here:. Katie, do you need the computer? Sometim...

Wo meine Rösen blüh'n. A blog about Austria. Friday, January 27, 2012. Famous Austrians IX: Falco. Seriously, this man was a genius, and (after Mozart) probably the most famous Austrian musician. Here is a sample of his music:. Falco, born Johann Hölzel in Vienna in 1957, was a 1980's pop/rock icon, and is most noted in the USA for his 1985 hit "Rock Me Amadeus". Falco died tragically young in a car crash in the Dominican Republic in 1998. And very. Thursday, January 12, 2012. What's in a Dream? Of cours...

Viennese-inspired Musings: Semi-Retired Kind of Life
http://kweltnerd.blogspot.com/2011/05/semi-retired-kind-of-life.html
Monday, May 23, 2011. Semi-Retired Kind of Life. For those of you that don't know, I work a maximum of 13 hours a week. Considering I teach in around 30 classrooms of students roughly the same ages, my lesson planning (especially lately) adds less than an hour a week to that already grueling schedule. In other words, I am semi-retired. Clearly my four years of university have made me deserve this laid-back lifestyle, right? Bench in the middle of a apricot tree grove. Bench looking at the Danube. I find ...

Viennese-inspired Musings: December 2010
http://kweltnerd.blogspot.com/2010_12_01_archive.html
Monday, December 20, 2010. A Magical Store, and other things. On Friday, I found Interspar. First, let me explain a bit about grocery stores in Austria. There are a lot of corner markets (ours is called Spar, though some are even Gourmet Spar, which is more expensive! Or Zielpunkt. Generally, we make a couple trips a week to the store so we can get the basics at Hofer and the day-to-day needs at Spar or wherever else (see Isaac's. Post about how to waste time, namely Tip #6). Aka bread spread, my new love.

Wo meine Rösen blüh'n: KUNSTHALLE: Parallelwelt Zirkus
http://wheremyrosesbloom.blogspot.com/2012/06/kunsthalle-parallelwelt-zirkus.html
Wo meine Rösen blüh'n. A blog about Austria. Thursday, June 21, 2012. One of the museums I went to see with my family was the KUNSTHALLE, a contemporary art museum in the Museumsquartier. Very near to where I live. The KUNSTHALLE (simply named: it translates literally as "art hall" or "art gallery") is a perennial favorite of mine, since it's so fresh and kooky - you never know what you'll get - from feminist pop art to Salvador Dali! Not that I don't appreciate the pomp of the Kunsthistorisches Museum.

Wo meine Rösen blüh'n: Breaking Up Is Hard To Do

Wo meine Rösen blüh'n. A blog about Austria. Friday, August 31, 2012. Breaking Up Is Hard To Do. I've been home for two months now, and this distance from Vienna has made me consider many things about the past two years. What have I learned in Austria? 1 Things on one side of the world are often very similar to things on the other, except for the expected linguistic difference. 2 Germany German and Austrian German are not. 3 A big city is not a small town. 6 I should probably keep both a blog and. 15 Eve...

http://wheremyrosesbloom.blogspot.com/2012/08/mach-ma-party.html
Wo meine Rösen blüh'n. A blog about Austria. Sunday, August 26, 2012. Sowe decided to have a party when I got back to the States to celebrate all the Austrian thing I experienced for the past two years. Chocolates - received as "going away" present. Yeah, I've been back since June. It's been interesting being back, since most everything is the same as how I left it. Weirdest was when I dated something as being in 2010 a few days ago- like the past two years haven't even existed! I baked a Sachertorte.
